Payment terminals support a range of features that go beyond basic payment acceptance. The availability of these features may vary depending on the terminal model, configuration, enabled services, and merchant setup.

The features listed below represent the most commonly used capabilities. Additional features may be available depending on the specific setup.

Receipts

Payment terminals can generate receipts for both the customer and the merchant. If a terminal supports printing, both consumer and merchant receipts are enabled by default. Terminals without an integrated printer, such as the A77, use digital receipt handling or cashier-side receipt handling where available. Digital receipts are not activated automatically and must be requested and enabled for the merchant setup. The A920 does not offer digital receipts. Receipts are generated in accordance with EP2 specifications, ensuring compliance with Swiss market standards.

Consumer Receipts

Consumer receipts are typically printed directly on standalone terminals. In addition, Nexi Switzerland can support digital consumer receipts (QR code receipts) upon request on supported terminal models. Email and SMS delivery are currently not supported.

Merchant Receipts

Merchant receipts are also printed by default on terminals with printing capabilities and serve as a record of completed transactions. Upon request, Nexi Switzerland can support digital merchant receipts, replacing or complementing printed copies.

Transaction Management

Terminals support various transaction-related functions beyond standard payments.

  • Refunds: Returning funds to a customer after a payment
  • Reversals: Cancelling transactions before submission
  • Reservations: Reserving an amount before the final transaction amount is known
  • Reservation adjustments: Increasing an existing reserved amount
  • Captures: Finalizing a reservation with the final transaction amount
  • Reprints: Reprinting the last receipt

All supported terminals can perform refunds. On integrated terminals, refund availability also depends on the connected ECR or POS integration. Refunds are not limited to the card used for the original transaction.

All supported terminals can reprint or reopen receipts. On integrated terminals, this also depends on how the ECR or POS integration handles receipts.

Reversals are possible before daily closing, and only for the last transaction.

Reservations, adjustments, and captures require activation and the appropriate terminal or integration setup. They are commonly used when the final amount is only known later, such as in hospitality or similar reservation-based flows.

Availability depends on configuration, merchant setup, and integration model. For definitions of these operations, refer to Payment Operations.

Reporting & Closing

Terminals provide operational reporting and closing functionality to support daily reconciliation.

  • Daily closing: Closes the current period, performs submission and transmission where required, and shows the operations performed during that period
  • Interim reports: Overview of transactions during the day
  • Summary reports: Aggregated transaction information

Reporting formats and availability may vary depending on the terminal and acquiring setup.

Tips

The tipping functionality allows merchants to offer customers the option to add a gratuity during the payment process.

  • Tips are added directly within the payment flow
  • Merchants can configure how tips are presented:
    • No tip: The tip flow is disabled
    • Manual entry: The customer can enter a custom amount
    • Predefined percentages: The customer sees percentage options, plus the option to enter a manual amount or continue without a tip

The experience may vary depending on terminal configuration and merchant setup.

Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)

Dynamic Currency Conversion allows international cardholders to pay in their home currency instead of the merchant’s configured settlement currency.

  • Currency choice is presented during the payment flow
  • Exchange rates and fees are disclosed to the cardholder
  • The merchant’s base currency remains the default
  • Availability depends on merchant configuration and agreement

QR-Based Payments

Some terminals support QR-based payment methods depending on configuration.

  • Nexi Switzerland processes TWINT, WeChat Pay, and Alipay+ through its in-house QR code solution
  • Additional QR payment methods must be requested
  • Availability depends on terminal setup, merchant configuration, and enabled services

Offline Payments

Offline payment capabilities allow merchants to continue accepting certain transactions when online authorisation is not available or when a transaction can be approved without going online.

Forced Acceptance is a general EP2 Own Risk fallback and must not be confused with standard EMV offline processing, which is configured on the acquiring side.

  • standard EMV offline processing depends on EMV rules, offline limits, and acquirer configuration
  • Forced Acceptance requires explicit activation and a merchant Own Risk agreement
  • Force Acceptance is available as an optional terminal capability, depending on merchant agreement and setup
  • pending offline or Forced Acceptance transactions must be submitted or transmitted once connectivity is restored

For the full distinction between standard EMV offline, Forced Acceptance, and recovery behaviour, see Offline Payments.

Manual Transaction Entry

Manual card entry is available on supported terminals.

  • Used as a fallback in specific scenarios
  • Typically restricted due to security considerations
  • The terminal asks for the card number, expiry date, and card security code

Remote Access & Support

On supported terminals, Nexi Switzerland can remotely access the device for configuration, troubleshooting, and operational support.

Remote access is only available on selected terminals and requires connectivity. This enables faster issue resolution and reduces the need for on-site intervention.
