Point of Sale

At Nexi Switzerland, we provide a broad range of Point of Sale (POS) solutions that allow merchants to accept payments in-store in a reliable and standardized way. Our terminal estate mainly consists of devices from Ingenico and PAX.

Point of Sale Categories

Terminals are designed for different types of businesses and operational models. Depending on how payments are triggered and processed, they can be grouped into three main categories.

  • Standalone terminals: Operated directly on the device, typically used in smaller or mobile environments
  • Integrated terminals: Connected to a cash register or POS system, commonly used in retail and hospitality (standalone terminals can also be integrated)
  • Unattended terminals: Used in self-service environments such as vending, parking, or ticketing

How Payments Are Accepted

Modern payment terminals support multiple ways for customers to complete a transaction. While contactless payments are now the most common method, terminals continue to support several technologies to ensure broad compatibility.

Contactless (NFC)

Customers tap their card, smartphone, or wearable device on the terminal. This is the fastest and most widely used method today.

Chip and PIN

The card is inserted into the terminal and the customer confirms the payment using their PIN. This method is still commonly used for higher-value transactions or when contactless is not available.

Magnetic Stripe

Cards can be swiped using the magnetic stripe. This method is increasingly rare and mainly used as a fallback.

Manual Card Entry

Card details can be entered manually on the terminal. This is typically restricted to specific use cases and may require additional security controls.

QR-Based Payments

Some terminals also support QR-based payment methods, such as TWINT. Customers scan a QR code using their mobile device to complete the transaction.
